Many condos try to make the most of a small space by offering a single-wall kitchen. But with fewer cabinets how do you make the most of a small footprint kitchen? Here are our tips to create an efficient workflow with everything within reach.
Some people shy away from single wall kitchens because they want more kitchen space. But did you know that a single-wall kitchen encroaches less on your living space, which means that you have more of an open plan living style? You can have one person in the kitchen cooking while others entertain themselves in the living space with easy access to both spaces.
Not all single wall kitchens are built equally. If you want to make the best plan for your kitchen's layout, put your fridge as an anchor on the far end of the kitchen run. Try to put counter space between appliances wherever possible, with a dishwasher and/or storage beneath the counters. Anchor the other end of your kitchen with a sink, with the stove in the middle. Make sure at least one part of the kitchen has a full cabinet's worth of counter space so that you have a space to prepare your food. If you have the space, you could frame your kitchen with tall cabinets bookending the kitchen.
Nowhere is storage space needed more than in a single wall kitchen. You can go about this in many ways. You can build cabinets that are deeper than traditional to give you more space, you can install overhead cabinets. Some folks fear that overhead cabinets with lower cabinets can make a space feel too small. For this, we recommend mixing it up with either shelving above the counters or bridged upper cabinets with shelving in between.
Most people will realize they can't fit a double door fridge nicely in a small apartment. But did you know that smaller appliances exist specifically for small units? You can find apartment sized fridges, dishwashers, stoves and sinks for a small single wall kitchen. You don't have to compromise on style and better yet, you'll find out you didn't need all that extra space in your appliances as when you first thought.
If you can afford to add a kitchen island both in terms of money and space, it's highly worth exploring this option. This addition will convert your single wall kitchen into a galley kitchen with optimal functionality. You will have additional storage space as well as a meal prep and even a dining area. It might be the space solution you were looking for!
